Hawke’s Bay Winegrowers has been attempting to increase the productivity of Chardonnay, as the region sees the potential for this to become the regional flagship wine variety. Trials undertaken to date either haven’t achieved the expected yield, or have been found to be impractical on a commercial scale. The outcomes of the BRI long-spur trial on Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc may help to address the challenges the region is facing in this area. This trial, in collaboration with Eastern Institute of Technology, investigates long-spur pruning on Chardonnay in terms of yields and yield components, to investigate whether the long-spur technique could result in increased yields.
