GRAPEVINE VARIETY TESTING

Identify your grapevines with 100% certainty

Let’s face it. Nobody wants unpleasant surprises when it comes to grapevine identification, least of all unexpectedly discovering that the vines you purchased are not the variety you selected.

At Bragato Research Institute, we offer New Zealand’s only genetic variety testing for grape vines. Our highly-specialised DNA sequencing capability means we can conclusively identify rootstock and scion varieties to assure your vines are true-to-type.

This process of vine identification has been a popular alternative in markets such as Australia, France and USA for over 15 years. We’re delighted to now offer this service in New Zealand.

We predominantly work with nurseries and commercial grape growers, however, this service is becoming increasingly popular for anyone in the business of buying and selling vines, such as real estate agents conducting due diligence. In Australia, this can allow vine sellers to negotiate lower rates of indemnity insurance and offer greater comfort and certainty to their own customers.

How we do it

The ideal time for sampling and testing is Spring. For you, it is as simple as cutting a young leaf, pressing it onto one of our sample cards, then posting it back to us. We’ll take it from there. We provide this service at our Grapevine Improvement Laboratory based at Lincoln University.

By analysing specific genetic markers against the database, we can provide you with unambiguous variety and species information. This technique is the most popular form of grapevine variety identification worldwide. Our custom-designed process allows us to test multiple markers simultaneously. This means we can process your samples faster and more cost-effectively, without compromising the accuracy of results.

Don’t miss out on our next round of testing

Grapevine variety testing is scheduled at certain times throughout the year.  The best time to sample is when the plant has young healthy leaves.  If you are interested in using this service please contact us to register your interest and indicate the number of samples and we will advise when the next run is scheduled.
