To better understand Pinot noir planting material available within New Zealand, Bragato Research Institute, in conjunction with Riversun Nursery and Otago Polytechnic, has produced microvin wines from a Central Otago Pinot noir clonal trial to help growers make informed decisions when planting or replanting vineyards by combining phenological, wine analysis and sensory analysis.

The Central Otago Pinot Noir Clonal Trial is based at Otago Polytechnic’s Bannockburn Road site. The trial was planted in 2017 and comprises four replicates of 12 Pinot Noir clones grafted to 3309.

This project collected vine and detailed harvest data in 2022 and 2023. Small-scale clonal wines and subsequent sensory and chemical analysis completed at BRI’s Research Winery have helped create a fuller picture to guide future planting and replanting decisions in Otago and other Pinot Noir regions growing Pinot Noir.

We aim to provide information from this trial to help guide future planting and replanting decisions in Central Otago and other wine regions in New Zealand growing Pinot Noir.
