BRI has recognised Dominic Pecchenino’s contributions to grape and wine research in New Zealand by naming one of their Research Winery tanks in his honour. Dominic’s commitment to industry-led research contributed to the creation of Bragato Research Institute as an industry-owned and directed research entity.

Dominic Pecchenino, originally from the USA, is a Marlborough-based grape grower and consultant, who has served industry organisations for more than two decades, with a particular focus on research.

Dominic chaired New Zealand Winegrowers’ Research Committee from 2006 to 2020, playing a leading role in the development of research programmes throughout that period.

The annual NZW research series, Grape Days, was Dominic’s brainchild. Along with NZW’s GM Research, Dr Simon Hooker, Dominic got the events off the ground as a way to present relevant and thought-provoking research outputs to members, and as a key platform for sharing information.

He also spearheaded bringing researcher Dr Mark Kristic from Australia to do research trials with him for mechanical thinning. The results of that work is being widely and very successfully used today.

Dominic’s commitment to an industry-led research programme culminated with the foundation of Bragato Research Institute as an industry-owned and directed research entity. Dominic served on the initial Board of Bragato Research Institute as Chair until he stepped down from service on the industry organisations’ Boards in 2020.

BRI CEO Jeffrey Clarke says, “Dominic’s vision and leadership has been instrumental to the establishment of BRI. It is an honour to mark his contributions with a tank in our Research Winery, a state-of-the-art facility that he helped design and bring into being for the benefit of the whole industry.”

Dominic’s service was also recognised by being inducted as a Fellow of New Zealand Winegrowers last week. The Roll of Fellows acknowledges individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the New Zealand wine industry.

His other industry roles include serving on the Wine Marlborough Board for 12 years, including three years as Chair. Nationally, he served as a member of the NZ Grape Growers Council from 2005 to 2014, and was a Board member of New Zealand Winegrowers from 2005 to 2020.
