An innovative vertical farming system that combines pastoral farming and viticulture via a high wire trellis system (HWTS), allowing a fully commercial sheep farm to operate beneath the canopy, is being pioneered in North Canterbury. There is a strong indication this multi-functional land use approach can significantly reduce the carbon footprint per unit of wine and unit of meat and provide parallel income. However, there is no system-level data and how to scale it is unknown.
We propose to leverage the knowledge and data that Greystone Wines has developed from their proof-of concept trial to quantify the system level carbon footprint and financial trade-offs. The assessment and knowledge will provide a pathway to facilitate wider adoption at scale.
