We are inviting researchers to submit Expressions of Interest to undertake new research projects with wide benefits for the New Zealand wine industry. The funding for these new projects will be provided by Bragato Research Institute.

This year, we are seeking research proposals that will support wine industry members to address shorter-term challenges, especially cost pressures. We are also seeking proposals that deliver research in actionable formats that wine industry members can apply in their businesses.  These priorities are guided by our recent survey of research needs.

Examples of research projects likely to be of particular interest include:

  • Increasing grapevine longevity
  • Selecting rootstocks for vine health and sustainability
  • Providing economic evidence of the benefits of new techniques
  • Reducing labour costs, spraying and energy usage
  • Compiling past research into simplified formats for growers and winemakers
  • Increasing wine quality and premiums
  • Improving detection and management of priority pests and diseases
  • New ideas to improve the New Zealand wine industry’s short- to medium-term productivity and profitability

We encourage applicants to suggest research proposals that will be completed in a one-to-two-year time frame and are likely to provide immediate benefits to the industry.

While these Expressions of Interest are intended for research providers, we encourage winegrowers members who wish to discuss a project idea to contact us at info@bri.co.nz at any time.
